What to Expect at a Fitting
The final step in your journey to better hearing isn't just about receiving your new technology; it’s about the moment the world snaps back into focus. Whether it’s the subtle rustle of leaves, the soft hum of a car, or the nuanced tones of a loved one’s voice, a successful fitting transforms these sounds from a confused muddle into clear, recognizable information. It is the transition from simply hearing noise to truly understanding your environment.
- Fittings take approximately an hour.
- Your hearing audiologist will test both the fit and functionality.
- You may need more than one fitting to get the best sound quality and comfort.
- Expect to review all your hearing aids’ advanced functions. Even if you’ve had a hearing aid before, pay close attention.
- Your hearing aid will be programmed based on your hearing test results.
- You’ll also review how to keep your hearing aid operating at its peak through regular cleaning and care.
- Schedule a follow up appointment to make adjustments and to answer any questions that come up after giving your hearing aids a test drive.
- After your fitting, spend some time every day doing practice to test and adjust your new hearing aids.

What Is Real Ear Measurement?
Real-Ear Measurement (REM) checks hearing-aid output inside your ear canal. A small probe tube measures amplified sound while you wear your hearing aids. Your Audiologist compares those measurements with prescription targets based on your hearing assessment and adjusts the settings where appropriate.
REM helps account for the acoustics of your individual ears. It is one part of fitting, alongside checks of physical comfort, sound quality and your communication goals. It does not guarantee perfect hearing or the same result in every environment.
At follow-up, describe situations that remain difficult so we can review your settings, handling and listening strategies. We also explain insertion, removal, charging or battery changes, cleaning and ongoing care.
